- Page numbers are formatted as follows:
- Font: Charis SIL, size 10
- Distance of footer from the bottom of the page: 1,1 cm (the distance of the header remains as standard with 1,25 cm)
- Position: Even numbers are left-aligned, odd numbers right-aligned
- Paragraph options as in the screenshots:
- The frontmatters have no page numbering, though the last two pages are included in the page count for Roman numerals. Thus, the list of contents always begins at ‘iii’, followed by other lists (of figures, etc.).
- In the current example, ‘General Editor’s Foreword’ starts on page ‘vii’. Depending on the length of the individual lists, you might need to change the pagination of this, and the following section (‘Preface and list of abbreviations’). In that case, do not change the page numbers manually. Always use the ‘format page number’ option to apply changes. You can find detailed information on this option in the tips for using the formatting features of Word for pagination.
- The section including ‘Preface’ and ‘List of Abbreviations’ follows the foreword from the next odd page on. In the current example, there is a blank page after the foreword because it ends on an odd page. If the foreword ends on an even page in your edition, the preface will follow from the next page number without a preceding blank page.
- The ‘Introduction’ section (included in ‘Commentary’ volume only) is the first section that is paginated with Arabic numerals.
- In the current example, ‘Introduction’ begins on page 1 without additional blank pages, because the preceding section (‘Preface…’) ends on an even page. If it ends on an odd page in your case, you will have to enter a blank page after the preceding section (without page number), so that the ‘Introduction’ can begin on page 1.
- After the ‘Introduction’, a title page for the following chapter (‘Critical Report’) appears. This page must be paginated with an odd number, thus there is a blank page without page number between the two in the current example. If your ‘Introduction’ ends on an even page, you should delete this blank page.
- The title page of the chapter ‘Transcription’ follows the list of contents in the volume for transcriptions. As it is with the title page for critical reports, this title page must always be on an odd page. In the current example, there is no blank page after the list of contents, because it ends on an even page. If your list of contents ends on an odd page, you will need to enter a blank page without pagination before the title page.
- Both abovementioned title pages are always followed by an empty page, to ensure that the relevant chapter begins on an odd page.
- The pagination of ‘Critical Report’ depends on the pagination of the ‘Introduction’. In the current example, the ‘Introduction’ ends on page 37. The following blank pages and the title page are not paginated visibly, but they are included in the page count. Thus the ‘Critical Report’ begins on page 41 in this case and the further pagination follows the standard rule of right- and left- alignment.
- The transcriptions always have the marking ‘Corpus Musicae Ottomanicae’ (centered, without date) on their first page; thus, they are not numbered (but included in the page count).
- The first ‘Transcription’ always begins on page 3, as the first page with Arabic numerals of the relevant volume, following the chapter title on page 1 and the blank page #2 (without visible numbering).
- The visible pagination of the transcriptions starts from the second page with #4, following the alignment rules of the other sections as mentioned above.
- Each individual transcription must begin on an odd page. To ensure that, you must add a blank page (without visible page number) after a transcription when it ends on an odd page. The following transcription then begins on the next odd page, as the blank page is included in the page count. Adding a blank page to a PDF file is quite easy, so you can use this option after converting the files if it’s more complicated in Sibelius.
